How much time do you spend rushing around trying to get somewhere on time – while carrying your morning coffee? Maybe you’re sipping on the train or the subway while reading a book and listening to an iPod. Maybe you’re drinking it while switching lanes and talking on the phone. You don’t even know that you’re drinking it because you’re too busy with everything else that you’re doing at the same time.
Today, prepare a cup of tea. Turn off all the media and electronics – radio, TV, cell phone, crackberry, etc. – and take some time to have a cup of tea with yourself.
Watch it brewing and smell the aroma of the tea leaves as steam rises from the edge of the cup. hold the cup or the mug with two hands, and feel the warmth in your palms. Breathe in slowly and exhale.
Pause before you sip, and consider the tea. Say to yourself, “Breathing in, I know that I am breathing in. Breathing out, I know that I am breathing out. Breathing in I feel calm, breathing out I smile.”
Sip the tea mindfully – enjoy the taste, notice how it changes and evolves on your tongue. Is it sweet, tannic or bitter? Is there an aftertaste? Be with the tea for a few minutes and experience just drinking tea.
